A series of robberies has rocked the island of Gorsemoor, all centred around the same block of shops. When two witnesses disagree over whether the thief wore a duck or goose mask, the town becomes divided. Hired by florist Nel Winslow, Laura investigates the crimes and uncovers a long-buried feud between the rival Dunstan-Pennington and Thornycroft families—while the mask debate threatens to overshadow the real mystery.

Every year, an exclusive club made entirely of people named Ian gathers for its annual meeting. This year, one of the Ians is murdered. Distrusting the police, the club hires Laura to investigate instead.
