  • EP182: When Pain Speaks: Understanding Suffering Through the Homeopathic Lens with Dr. Massimo Mangialavori & Tomomi Miyakawa
    2026/07/01
THE HOMEOPATHY HEALTH SHOW When Pain Speaks: Understanding Suffering Through the Homeopathic Lens with Dr Massimo Mangialavori & Tomomi Miyakawa Episode Summary Some experiences are universal. Every human being, regardless of age, culture, or background, encounters pain. Yet while pain is shared by all, the way it is experienced, expressed, and ultimately understood is profoundly individual. In this thought-provoking episode of the Homeopathy Health Show, Atiq Ahmad Bhatti and Naila Cheema welcome internationally renowned physician and homeopath Dr Massimo Mangialavori, alongside London-based homeopath Tomomi Miyakawa, for a deep exploration into one of the most important—and often misunderstood—subjects in medicine and homeopathy: pain. Rather than viewing pain as merely a symptom to suppress, Dr Mangialavori invites listeners to reconsider it as a deeply personal language of the organism. From physical suffering to grief, trauma, emotional wounds, and the inability to even find words for one's experience, this conversation explores how pain shapes our lives and how homeopathy offers a uniquely individualised approach to understanding it. Drawing upon decades of clinical experience, anthropology, philosophy, psychology, natural history, and classical homeopathy, Dr Mangialavori explains why the patient's description of pain is often as important as the pain itself. Whether burning, tearing, crushing, overwhelming, or impossible to describe, each expression offers insight into the individual rather than simply the disease. The discussion also explores: Why conventional medicine still struggles to fully understand chronic pain. The difference between physical pain, emotional pain, and existential suffering. How grief and loss become embedded within the human experience. Why some patients cannot describe their suffering at all.The significance of individuality when prescribing homeopathic remedies. The relationship between resilience, consciousness, and healing. Why listening remains one of the homeopath's greatest clinical skills. The value of immersive, in-person seminar learning compared with online education. Tomomi Miyakawa also shares her perspective on learning directly from Dr Mangialavori through years of collaboration, emphasising that homeopathy is not only about acquiring knowledge, but refining perception, observation, and the art of truly listening. The episode concludes with a preview of Dr Mangialavori's forthcoming UK seminar series on Pain Management in Homeopathy, where practitioners will have the opportunity to explore these themes in far greater clinical depth through an interactive educational experience. This is not simply a discussion about treating pain. It is a conversation about understanding what pain means. About Our Guests Dr Massimo Mangialavori Dr Massimo Mangialavori is an Italian medical doctor and internationally respected homeopath whose work has influenced practitioners across the world. Qualifying in medicine in 1984, he has devoted decades to clinical practice, research and teaching. Known for his pioneering Method of Complexity, Dr Mangialavori integrates materia medica with anthropology, psychology, mythology, natural history and human behaviour, allowing practitioners to understand remedies as dynamic living patterns rather than isolated collections of symptoms. His seminars continue to inspire homeopaths globally through their depth, originality and clinical relevance. Tomomi Miyakawa Tomomi Miyakawa graduated from the University of Edinburgh in Plant Science (Biochemistry) before completing her homeopathic studies in Integrated Medicine at the University of Westminster. Practising in London since 2004, she combines homeopathy with complementary therapeutic disciplines and has worked extensively alongside Dr Massimo Mangialavori, including serving as his English–Japanese interpreter during seminars in Japan. She is instrumental in bringing Dr Mangialavori's teaching to the UK and continues to support practitioners through education and clinical collaboration.
