Hiphop has been one of the most influential American music forms in the last 50 years, yet its story is often reduced to a handful of famous artists and iconic albums while ignoring the richer history beneath it. Thus, in this podcast, we will be looking at the beginning of hiphop in the Bronx during the 1970s and exploring its influence outside of the Bronx and the creation of new rap genres, from party-oriented rap to gangsta rap, conscious rap, drill, and beyond.

This series also looks beyond the United States to examine how the same form of music existed in other countries. A major focus of this podcast is Chinese hip-hop, exploring how Chinese artists have balanced authenticity, commercialization, and government censorship while creating a distinctly Chinese rap culture.
