Episode #6 Ed Goddard — Consistency, Progression and Enjoying the Journey

Welcome back to High Performance with Joe Sprange. Today, my conversation is with a local legend around the streets of the North Shore, Mullet Man otherwise known as Ed Goddard, one of Australia’s leading distance runners. A City2Surf champion, multiple winner of the HOKA Runaway Sydney Half Marathon and a marathoner with a personal best of 2:12:52, Ed has come a long way since his first race at the local Mini-Mos in Year 6.

For Ed, high performance means performing at his best and at a level that is competitive. His keys to delivering this are pretty simple:

· Consistency - putting in the work every day - rail, hail or bad day.

· Progression - continually seeking ways to learn, grow, and improve.

· Attention to detail - looking at the technical aspects of his sport and how they can give him that important 1%.

What stayed with me was how much enjoyment Ed gets from the journey itself, there’s the ambition to compete, but also importantly an appreciation for the process of getting better.

In our conversation, we explore learning from failure, his determination to keep going and why he says he doesn’t know when to quit. Ed also reflects on the real sense of calmness he experienced during the HOKA Half.

My favourite quote from our conversation: “The race isn't over till it's over, and that's good and bad.”

For me, it’s a reminder to keep going when you’re behind and stay focused when you’re ahead. There’s still work to do until you cross the finish line.

I hope you enjoy our conversation. I’d love you too drop your thoughts in the comments below.

Until then legends!
