概要
On a Sunday morning in April 2010, 25-year-old Heidi Fergus called 911 from her home in St. Paul, Minnesota. She said someone was trying to get in. About 35 seconds into the call, there was a scream and a loud blast, and the line went dead. Her husband, Nick, told police an intruder had grabbed his shotgun and shot them both. No one saw a man arrive or leave. What almost no one knew was that the house had been sold at a sheriff’s auction nearly a year earlier, and a deputy was due to lock the couple out at noon the next day. Prosecutors said Nick had hidden the foreclosure from his wife, his church and their friends behind a stream of small lies, and that the shooting came when the deadline could no longer be avoided.

It took eleven years to bring a charge. In 2023, a jury convicted Nick Fergus of first-degree murder after about four hours, and he was sentenced to life without release. In 2026, the Minnesota Supreme Court upheld the verdict, but the chief justice dissented, saying the evidence left room for doubt. Nick has always maintained his innocence.

This episode follows Heidi’s life, the financial collapse behind the scenes, what the evidence shows and doesn’t show, and the two families still living with the outcome.

Content note: This episode discusses the killing of a young woman. Listener discretion is advised.
