The tribute to Cronos continues on Heavy Metal Tones, and this week we turn our attention to what many consider his pinnacle with Venom: the legendary Black Metal.

Following last episode’s homage to the man behind the voice, bass and attitude that helped change the face of heavy music, it’s time to revisit the record that gave an entire genre its name. Heavy Metal Tones – Episode 296: A Farewell to Cronos

This is a sad one.

Before we revisit the past, I pay tribute to Cronos — Conrad Lant, the voice, force and driving spirit behind Venom, and one of the figures who helped shape the sound and attitude of extreme metal.

I take a moment to remember Cronos and reflect on his enormous impact before revisiting Episode 133 from November 2023, where I took a deep dive into Welcome to Hell.

An album that changed the rules, challenged everything that came before it, and helped lay the foundations for black metal, death metal and the extreme metal world that followed.

This isn’t just a revisit of an old episode. It’s a look back at a record that still sounds dangerous, raw and utterly uncompromising — and a chance to remember the man behind it.

Raise the volume. Remember Cronos. Remember Venom.
