Where do we REALLY fit in today?🇨🇭Grief Before Reinvention. Strategic Chokepoints. The Power of Being Indispensable.Episode 299 of Heads Talk® and we are nearly at 300!! There is still something slightly surreal about that number. We started the Autumn season with a bang, so let's keep going...Howard Yu is one of those guests whose words you hang on because you know there is a gem coming around the corner. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation and am delighted that, after all this time, our diaries finally crossed, intertwined and we actually made it to an episode, an approaching 2-hour episode. I’ve wanted to have this conversation with Howard for some time, particularly around middle powers, where they are heading and how they retain relevance in a changing power architecture.Howard Yu is LEGO® Professor of Management and Innovation at IMD Business School, leads its Center for Future Readiness, and is a Thinkers50 Strategy Award winner. His work sits squarely at the intersection of innovation, strategy and the uncomfortable question of what makes organisations, and now nations, capable of surviving what comes next.At the heart of this conversation is the identity, and perhaps the identity crisis, of today's middle powers. Howard takes the thinking he has applied to more than 400 companies and turns the lens on nations: a country can remain wealthy and successful on paper while quietly becoming strategically poorer. He challenges the West's fascination with the "next frontier" while allowing parts of the industrial body, supply chains and manufacturing capability to atrophy, and asks what happens when technological sophistication sits on infrastructure someone else controls. His answer is not simply to become bigger. It is to become indispensable. There is a fascinating discussion on the grief of power, the psychology of decline, technological dependency and Howard's "Intel Inside" proposition for middle powers: don't necessarily own the whole system, become a part of it that the system cannot easily do without. And perhaps that is the real future-readiness test. Not how powerful you once were, but whether you can still matter when the architecture around you changes.Howard, as expected, delivers insight after insight. I urge you to listen. And if, like me, you can never get enough of Howard, his Substack, One Inch Ahead, is another rabbit hole worth falling into. See links below. • 298 - Professor Klaus Schwab, Founder, CEO: Power Series, World Economic Forum (WEF), Schwab Academy - Power

Let us know your thoughts. Send us a Text Message. Follow me to see #HeadsTalk Podcast Audiograms every Monday on LinkedInEpisode Title: 🇨🇭Power🇨🇭The return of the Heads Talk® Power Series begins with a bang and a fitting question:When power changes hands, what changes with it?After a long summer detox break I'm absolutely honoured to have Professor Klaus Schwab, Founder of the World Economic Forum, kickstart Part 2 of the series. We go back to the thinking that shaped Davos and forward into a different power landscape.I wanted to go back to the beginning. Back to 1971, when Professor Schwab questioned whether a company could really exist simply for its shareholders. His answer was no. He developed what became known as the stakeholder concept, arguing that business sits within a much wider social system, with responsibilities to employees, government, communities and society. More than five decades later, that thinking feels anything but dated. In our current economy shaped by technology, AI and systems operating across borders, who carries responsibility and accountability has become even more pressing. The question now is whether stakeholder capitalism needs to evolve again because the systems themselves have become centres of power. That takes us directly into Prof. Schwab’s latest book, The Competitive Enterprise in the Intelligent Age, and his argument that we are moving beyond another technological revolution into a new age altogether. We also explore the fascinating evolution of soft power. Professor Schwab reflects on his work with Professor Joseph Nye and how influence has become more complex, technological and, at times, more coercive. Yet the conversation ends somewhere unexpectedly hopeful: constructive optimism. Not passive hope, but the belief that the future is something we actively construct. We are back!I couldn't think of a better way to restart the power series on Heads Talk, than with today's guest. #HTPowerSeriesTopics Covered: ◻️ Stakeholder Capitalism: The idea that changed the role of business◻️ From Stakeholders to Systems: A new architecture of responsibility◻️ Techno Elites: When innovation becomes power◻️ AI vs Democratic Control: Can governance keep pace?◻️ The Intelligent Age: Beyond another industrial revolution◻️ The Productivity Paradox: Who captures the gains?◻️ Soft Power: From influence to weaponisation◻️ A Multipolar World: When the old order disappears◻️ Power, Legitimacy & Human Dignity: The danger of concentrated power◻️ Future of Work as an Architectural Layer◻️ Constructive Optimism: Who gets to build the future?⛔️Listen to this episode's Heads Talk - The Analysis by TBA HERE! • 297 - Dame Susan Langley DBE: Power Series, City of London Corporation - Unsquaring the Square Mile: The Chain and the Change
    2026/07/20

Episode Title: 🇬🇧Unsquaring the Square Mile: The Chain and the Change🇬🇧

Great institutions are not defined by whether they change. They are defined by how they change.

The ceremonial chain represents continuity. Change ensures continuity remains relevant.

Sometimes, transformation arrives not through revolution, but through quiet evolution. A single word changes. Lord Mayor becomes Lady Mayor. Tradition remains intact, yet expectations subtly shift. One of Britain's oldest institutions continues to honour its past while recognising that relevance depends on its ability to evolve.

In this episode of the Heads Talk® Power Series, I'm joined by Dame Susan Langley DBE, the 697th Lord Mayor of the City of London, only the third woman to hold the office in almost 700 years and the first to be formally styled Lady Mayor.

Together, we move well beyond financial markets. We explore trust, institutions and the changing social contract; why misinformation has become an economic threat; whether capitalism is being quietly redefined; why resilience alone cannot repair broken systems; and why emotional intelligence may become one of the most valuable currencies in the next decade...or sooner.

From the future of the City of London to AI, burnout, social mobility and Britain's place in a changing global economy, this conversation asks an important question: How do institutions evolve without losing the very qualities that made them worth preserving?

Perhaps the answer begins with an even bigger question: Can institutions remain relevant without first reimagining the people they were built to serve?

    Topics Covered:
◽️Lady Mayor: Why changing one word changed far more than a title inside one of Britain's oldest institutions
◽️Why misinformation threatens confidence, investment and competitiveness
◽️Team UK: Reclaiming Britain's global narrative
◽️Capitalism's Missing Promise: Is the social contract being rewritten?
    ◽️Uncertainty and Navigating Constant Change
◽️Burnout, the "always-on" culture and redesigning unhealthy systems
◽️Resilience Paradox: When resilience becomes a substitute for responsibility
◽️Emotional intelligence and Empathy in Turbulent Times
◽️Unsquaring the Square Mile: Opening institutions without losing their identity
    ◽️The Human Advantage
◽️Power's Final Responsibility: Where leadership begins and process ends
