概要
Cold precision and a dry hardcover in a flooded ditch: a runner finds a perfectly preserved book that unravels eight months of methodical identity theft-how did one man erase a writer and stitch her life to a fake author? What did a misplaced acknowledgments page reveal?
In this episode, you will hear how a literary relationship turned into a long con, the steps that created a counterfeit publication, and the single oversight that exposed everything. Listen to learn how routine habits, access to an ISBN account, and a twelve-year-old cat’s medication schedule became crucial details in the case.
Person: Denise Boyd
Person: Keith Perry
Location: Clover Falls, Ohio
Date: March 12, 2019
Event: 237 edits to a manuscript
- A runner named Warren Bailey found the book in a drainage ditch that had been flooded for two days on March 12, 2019.
- Denise Boyd had sent 41 query letters over six months before signing with Keith Perry in July 2018.
- Perry made 237 individual edits, stripping place names and changing the mother’s name to create the author "Claire Ashton."
- Perry registered the book through Linden Gate’s ISBN account and arranged a 300-copy print-on-demand run in February 2019.
- Denise’s acknowledgments still thanked "Helen," which ultimately exposed the fraud.
