- The ice at the eastern margin of Pell Lake was three inches thick over an underwater spring with water at 39°F.
- Carl was traveling at 30 miles per hour when the ice gave way and he was submerged for 4-5 seconds.
- The snowmobile sank to rest eight feet below the surface with an orange dry bag still strapped to the rear platform.
- The orange dry bag contained a down sleeping bag, a length of rope, and an emergency kit with a space blanket and a lighter.
- The snowmobile's registration led investigators in July to a ranch outside Ely where Carl, who had been missing for five months, answered the phone and said he was home.
