Leo Fender created the iconic Telecaster guitar. He built it at a workbench in Fullerton in 1950, after hollow-body guitars screeched with uncomfortable feedback whenever players cranked up the volume. He was a radio repairman trained as an accountant who didn't know how to play a chord or even tune a guitar, but he understood circuits and figured he could stop the distortion. He bolted a plain maple neck onto a solid slab of ash, mounted two magnetic pickups, and gave it an industrial finish — purists laughed, but his name is now familiar to guitar fans everywhere.
