In this episode, Brian sits down with a member of the 1988 National Championship team, Scooter Barry. Scooter hails from a legendary basketball family, as the son of Hall of Famer, Rick Barry. Between, Scooter, his brothers and his dad, the Barry boys have a combined 63 seasons of professional basketball experience, 3 NBA titles, 1 Olympic gold and 1 NCAA Championship – Scooter’s, as a member of that “Danny and the Miracles” team.

Scooter relives that legendary run in the spring of 1988, and talks about what it was like to play for Larry Brown and alongside KU’s all-time leading scorer, Danny Manning. He also shares memories of playing for a young Roy Williams who took over in the fall of 1988. Brennan Bechard is in his 14th season with Kansas men’s basketball and currently serves as the program’s Director of Scouting. A Lawrence native, Bechard’s journey with KU spans nearly two decades, beginning as a graduate student manager in 2009, later serving as Assistant Director of Basketball Operations, and then Director of Basketball Operations from 2013–2019.

As a member of the Kansas staff, Bechard has been part of one of the most successful stretches in college basketball history, contributing to 10 Big 12 regular-season championships, five Big 12 Tournament titles, seven Sweet 16 appearances, five Elite Eights, two Final Fours, and the 2008 NCAA National Championship.

Before joining the staff, Bechard was an invited walk-on for the Jayhawks from 2007–09, lettering three seasons and earning three championship rings. He appeared in 35 career games, including five postseason contests, and started his final home game in Allen Fieldhouse against Texas.

A graduate of the University of Kansas with a degree in sport management, Bechard remains a proud product of Lawrence and a key piece of the Jayhawks’ sustained success.
