  • How To Prepare Your Body For Winter: 3 Habits For Your Metabolism, Mood & Energy | E297
    2026/10/05
What if the thing that makes your January feel better is a 10-minute walk you take in October? This episode is a night walk recording, in the dark, with two skunks hanging around my backyard. If the audio suddenly cuts off, you know how my story ends. Here's the backstory. I'm coming out of a season of stress, burnout, and overwhelm, and I've been rebuilding my circadian rhythm one boring, consistent habit at a time. I'm also learning to trust myself again, because it's hard to feel good about yourself when you say you'll do something and then the day gets away from you for a bunch of mostly good reasons. Anyone else been ghosting yourself lately? Me too.So today I'm letting you in on how I'm actually looking after my health this fall, and giving you the 3 habits I'm leaning on to support my immune system, my metabolism, and my nervous system before winter shows up and the holidays do their thing. Here's what you'll hear:The one habit I'd keep if I could only keep one this fall, and why chilly mornings make it easier to stick withWhat your body is asking the second you wake up (hint: it wants to know what day it is and whether you're safe, which is a lot to figure out first thing in the morning)The 30-a-week goal that sounds like a lot until you find out what counts (yes, your spices are on the list)How a little more variety on your plate supports your gut, your estrogen detox, and your progesterone3 easy ways to charge your battery that don't need a gym membership or a free SaturdayThe treat swaps I'm making this holiday season, so I'm not feeling awful by January (plus why my homemade marshmallows have me feeling a little smug)Let's be honest about winter. For a lot of us, it's the least healthy season of the year. We're stuck inside, we're eating differently, we're probably drinking more, and the stress comes from every direction, including the bank account. Then January shows up, and you're sitting on the couch feeling low energy and puffy, thinking, "I was doing so well in September, where did it all go?" You were doing well. And you can do it again, with way less effort than you think. If you're a mom, I know your time is already spoken for. Your calendar is a game of Tetris, and somebody just texted that there's a class party and you're on snacks. That's why I made these habits bang for your buck. Each one works on your hormones, your blood sugar, your mood, and your energy all at once, and none of them need a perfect routine or a big budget. Fall is a great time to invest your time and your intention, and I promise that costs less than another trip down the supplement aisle.Maybe your PMS gets louder every winter. Maybe your cravings go from a polite request to a full takeover the minute the Halloween candy walks in the door. Maybe you feel wired and tired at the same time, and nobody can tell you why. Your body has been working with mixed signals, and some of the simplest fixes are the ones we skip because they seem way too basic to matter. I skipped them too, and I'm the one who teaches this stuff.I'm also honest in this episode about how many excuses I've collected this season. My favorite so far is "it's dark now so I can't be on my computer." These 3 habits gave me something small enough to keep a promise to myself again, and that did more for my stress than any new plan I could've written. Then there's the holiday stretch, which kicks off with candy in October and somehow includes about 4 Thanksgivings. I love a treat, and I'm not about to tell you to skip them. I'm sharing the swaps that let me enjoy my hot chocolate and my s'mores and still feel like myself in January. We've all walked the feel-bad-by-January trail before, and we can skip it this year.Want a preview of the walking part? Your body wakes up every morning looking for signals. Are we safe? Do we have what we need? What day is it? What time is it? The first real light you see answers a lot of that, and it shapes how your cortisol, insulin, and blood sugar behave all day long. When those settle down, your mood steadies, your hunger and fullness cues start making sense, and keeping your weight steady feels way less like a fight. I've seen this change my own progesterone, mood, and energy, which is why I'm so loud about it.I'll also tell you the one thing I'd leave at home on that walk, and it's probably in your hand right now. Five or 10 minutes is all you need, and I will happily stand on that hill.On the gut side, I've been deep in gut protocols with my clients, and I caught myself stuck in the apples, bananas, and oranges rut. I've even promoted that rut by accident for years, so no judgment here. More variety in your week feeds your good gut bacteria, calms inflammation, and gives your body the vitamins it needs to make progesterone. Spices, potatoes, and sweet potatoes all count, so it's a lot more doable than it sounds, and counting with your family makes grocery shopping weirdly fun.Charging your battery can look really ...

  • The Gut-Hormone Connection Nobody Taught Your Doctor, With Dr. Cassie Smith | E296
    2026/09/28
What if "everything looks normal" is the biggest lie your labs are telling you, because nobody thought to look at your gut?I brought a functional endocrinologist on the podcast this week because I wanted someone with actual letters after her name to say the thing I've been saying for years. Dr. Cassie has treated close to 10,000 people, she's lived through her own mess with Hashimoto's, Graves, and PCOS, and she walked away from traditional medicine because watching her patients get another prescription every single visit while never actually getting better broke her heart. She went looking for the missing piece. She found it in a place almost no doctor is ever trained to look.Your gut. This episode connects the dots between your gut, your insulin, your blood sugar, and every hormone you've been quietly trying to fix on your own. If you've ever felt dismissed, confused, or like your body showed up without an instruction manual, grab your coffee and settle in for this one. Here's what we cover:The "locked door" theory that explains why your hormones can look perfect on paper while you feel like a shell of yourselfWhat's actually happening in your gut that sabotages your thyroid, your insulin, and your mood, and why your doctor was probably never trained to check itThe real reason insulin gets a bad reputation it doesn't fully deserve, and what it's actually trying to do for youWhy fasted workouts might be quietly working against your goals, especially if weight loss is the goalThe dark room analogy Dr. Cassie uses for intermittent fasting that will completely change how you think about skipping mealsThe most dangerous sentence on social media right now, and why falling for it keeps women stuckLet's talk about the locked door thing for a second because it genuinely stopped me mid-sentence while we were recording.Every cell in your body has a door. That door is what lets hormones in so they can actually do their job. When you're inflamed, whether that's from stress, poor sleep, blood sugar swings, or gut issues you didn't even know you had, that door locks up. Double locks, in Dr. Cassie's words. Your hormone can be floating around your bloodstream at a completely normal level, and it still can't get where it needs to go. Your labs say you're fine. Your body says otherwise. And you're left wondering if you're just lazy or dramatic or making it up.You're not making anything up. Your cells are locked, and nobody thought to check the door.We also got into insulin, which gets treated like the villain of every hormone conversation when really it's a hormone your body needs to survive. The real issue is what happens when it stays chronically high, and how one overworked hormone can set off a cascade through your cortisol, your progesterone, your estrogen, and your thyroid all at once. Dr. Cassie walked through exactly how that domino effect plays out, and once you hear it laid out this way, so many of your symptoms suddenly click into place. The 2 a.m. wake-ups. The bloating that shows up out of nowhere. The mood swings that feel bigger than the moment deserves. The weight that won't move no matter what you cut.And can we talk about intermittent fasting for a second? If it genuinely works for your body, I am not here to take that away from you. But Dr. Cassie gave an analogy that made me set my coffee down. She compares inconsistent eating to being locked in a dark room while someone randomly throws food at you with zero schedule and zero pattern. Your body has no idea when it's getting fed next, so it holds on to everything it possibly can, just in case. That is a body in survival mode, and survival mode has never once been where hormone balance happens. If you work out fasted because everyone on social media swears by it, this episode might change your mind, or at the very least hand you the nuance nobody bothered giving you.My favorite part of the whole conversation was when Dr. Cassie called out the danger of the one thing that fixes everything. You know the accounts I mean. The ones with the six-pack, strong opinions about carbs being the enemy, and zero context about your actual body. What worked for that person was never guaranteed to work for you, because your body carries its own history, its own stress load, its own starting line. There is no universal fix, and hearing a doctor with 14 years of training say that out loud felt like permission to stop chasing whatever trend is loudest this week.Press play, get comfy, and let Dr. Cassie hand you back the missing pages of your own story. I've been in this space for years, and Dr. Cassie still taught me things I didn't know about my own gut. That's the kind of conversation this is.CONNECT WITH DR. • How Your Feminine Energy Actually Fixes Your Husband’s Low Testosterone, With Dr. Heather Rhodes | E295
    2026/09/21
Have you ever tried so hard to fix your husband's health that you ended up more exhausted than he is, thinking, "I could fix you if you'd just let me"?I've been there more times than I want to admit, and so has my friend Dr. Heather Rhodes. We sat down this week for a real, sometimes uncomfortable conversation about what's actually happening in your husband's body and hormones, and what your role is in all of it. Spoiler alert: your role is smaller than you think, and somehow also way more powerful than you think. We're talking low testosterone, gut health, mood, motivation, that "he just seems off lately" feeling you can't quite name. We also talk about the approach most women try first that tends to backfire, and what actually works when you're ready to stop pushing and start something different. Here's what we get into:Why low testosterone is almost always a messenger, not the actual problem, and what it's usually pointing back toThe everyday habit quietly tanking testosterone in more men than you'd guess, and it has nothing to do with the gym or his plateWhat "masculine and feminine energy" actually means in practical terms, not the woo-woo version, the version that changes how your household runs The phrase Heather uses with her clients that flips "how do I get him to change" into a completely different questionThe physical stuff behind that dad bod, low energy, and short fuse, and the layer underneath it that's easy to missWhy trying to push your husband into masculine energy by going more masculine yourself is the exact thing keeping you both stuckNow let's go a little deeper, because I know some of you clicked play with a very specific husband in mind.Maybe it's the exhaustion that showed up out of nowhere. Maybe it's the belly fat, or the way he seems scattered, or glued to his phone, or just not quite himself anymore. You've noticed, and you've probably said something. Gently the first few times, less gently after that, and it hasn't landed the way you hoped.Heather and I talk about something I wish someone had told me years ago. A man's body works like a blueprint. Whatever goes into the system - sleep, minerals, food, stress - is what comes out the other side. Just like with our own hormones, the hormone itself is rarely the real story. It's a sign pointing to something underneath that's out of balance. We walk through what that looks like in real marriages, including ours. Seed oils and processed food quietly wrecking blood sugar. Gut inflammation from too much protein powder, which is a real thing and catches a lot of "healthy" guys off guard. The screen habits messing with dopamine and testosterone in ways most people have no idea about. But the physical piece isn't even what stuck with me most from this conversation. We spend real time on the energetics, what it actually means to live in feminine energy versus masculine energy, and why so many of us think we're doing it right when we're still quietly trying to control the outcome. If you've ever caught yourself managing his schedule, tracking his moods, or resenting him for not doing the thing you already decided he should do, this one's going to feel a little exposing. Good kind of exposing. We also get into healthy versus unhealthy masculinity, because that difference matters more than most people realize, and we get honest about the fear that shows up when you stop controlling and start trusting. That gap between letting go and watching if he steps up can feel terrifying to sit in, and we talk about why sitting in it anyway is where the actual shift happens. If you're the woman who's been carrying the mental load for your whole household, wondering why he's not getting it even though you've explained it a hundred different ways, this episode gives you language for what's really going on, and a genuinely different place to start. So here's my challenge for you this week. Before you say one more word to him about what he should be doing differently, ask yourself what you're doing to feel safe, full, and clear in your own energy. Start there. Let him surprise you with what happens next.CONNECT WITH DR. HEATHER:WebsiteIG: @drheatherrhodesNEED HELP FIXING YOUR HORMONES?
