In this episode, Kara sits down with Grammy, Oscar, and Emmy Award-winning artist Gabriella Wilson, known as H.E.R., right before the premiere of DreamWorks' Forgotten Island. Gabi talks about why she debuted anonymously at 18 and how her glasses got lighter and lighter until people could finally see her, being one Tony away from an EGOT, growing up half Black and half Filipino in the Bay Area with karaoke on her mom's side and blues concerts on her dad's, the joke she invented on the spot in the recording booth that made it into the actual film, what it felt like to bring her Filipino family to the Manila premiere and watch the crowd go crazy, the version of success she had to unlearn as the eldest Filipino daughter, and why she says she's Gabi before she's anything else. H.E.R. (Gabriella Wilson) is a Grammy, Academy Award, and Emmy-winning Filipino and African-American singer-songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and actress from Vallejo, California. She has won five Grammys, including Song of the Year for “I Can’t Breathe,” and an Oscar for “Fight for You” from Judas and the Black Messiah. Most recently, she voices Jo in DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island, in theaters September 25, 2026. Instagram: @hermusicofficial Forgotten Island is directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, the filmmaking team behind Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. It's rooted in Philippine mythology, set on the fictional island of Nakali, and features Liza opposite H.E.R. as lifelong best friends Jo and Raissa.
