    This is part three of our Pressing On series, exploring Philippians 3:4–14 and the Apostle Paul’s powerful reminder that things the world considers valuable cannot compare to knowing Jesus Christ.

    In this text, Paul reminds us that our accomplishments cannot save us, our worth is found in Jesus, and our faith calls us to press on toward the goal of knowing Christ and participating in God’s kingdom here on earth. We don’t serve, love, and care for others to earn God’s grace. We do it because we have experienced His goodness and want others to experience it, too.

    It is called the 5 tests of forgiveness, and it is developed by Ron Edmonson:

    1. The first thought test (what is the first thought that comes to mind when you see that person…is it a good one?)
    2. The Opportunity to Help Test (if they were in need and called to ask you for help - what would you do?)
    3. The Positive Thoughts (Can you come up with anything good about this person… to them and others… despite what they did)
    4. The Revenge Test (Do you constantly think about getting revenge?) (This is not our job. This is God’s job!)
    5. The failure test (Do you secretly want them to fail? You don’t want them to succeed… jealousy, envy take root)

    I share that because I think that test really gives us some good insight into whether we have really forgiven someone or a situation, or what we need to work on.
