In the autumn of 2019, I spent three weeks in a borrowed cabin outside a town called Pender's Mill, North Carolina. The town was small and quiet, the kind of place where everyone knows your truck before they know your name. I was there to write, but the writing never came. Instead, I found myself walking the same stretch of Old County Road 17 every evening, past the blackwater creek and the live oaks draped in Spanish moss. There was one tree in particular—a massive cypress at the bend in the creek—that seemed to draw my eye every time. I started noticing things about it. The way the water moved around its roots, the sound it made when the wind picked up, the fact that I never saw any birds land in its branches. By the third week, I had stopped writing altogether. I was just watching. And then one night, the tree started watching back. This is a story about a place that doesn't forget, and a tree that remembers everything.
