Many of us read of green pastures and waters of comfort while we feel anxious and behind. Through David's confession that the Lord is his shepherd, Benjamin invites us to name the lesser shepherds we trust and the ways we numb ourselves. In the valley of the shadow of death, we find Christ our high priest beside us with rod and staff, setting a table before us while his goodness and mercy pursue us.

Psalm 80 with Fr. Art Going.

Many of us grieve a church that seems to be fading, whether from cultural indifference, division or the empty seats. Through Psalm 80's prayer to the Shepherd of Israel, Fr. Art invites us to bring that grief to God in lament and repentance. With Bonhoeffer and Augustine, we learn that the Psalms are Christ's own prayers, so when we pray "Restore us, O God," Christ prays it with us as the vine who renews his branches.

Because He is compassionate, He forgives us and disciplines us as a good Father, training us in the way of life.

Praise can feel out of reach when life gives us little reason for it. Through David's psalm of praise, written by a king who knew both great joy and great sorrow, Mtr. Suzie invites us to make praise a choice grounded in who God is. As we tell one another the stories of God's faithfulness, we come to know a King of unsearchable greatness who stoops to uphold the falling and raise up those bowed down.

Psalm 103 with Fr. Art Going. Grief fades with time, and the memory of mercy fades faster. Twenty-five years after September 11, Fr. Art turns to Psalm 103, where David commands his own soul to bless the Lord and forget not all his benefits. Praise begins as a discipline before it becomes a feeling. As we name what God has done in forgiving, healing, redeeming, crowning and satisfying us, our past is retold as mercy and our hearts learn to answer the yes God speaks in his Son.

Romans 12:3-8 with Dcn. Derek. In Ezekiel's valley of dry bones, God asks a question we would rather answer from a safe distance: can these bones live? Paul answers yes. Through Romans 12, Dcn. Derek invites us to see that Christ saves us as his body, Jesus the head and his church joined in one life. The gifts he gives are works of that salvation, and through them resurrection is already underway as old divisions and grudges break down.
