The final Beatitudes confront us with Christ’s rigorous honesty: the life of the Kingdom does not end in ease but in persecution for righteousness’ sake, and this trouble is itself a blessing. Jesus makes clear that trouble is unavoidable in human life, yet there is a profound difference between the bitter troubles we bring upon ourselves and the blessed suffering that comes from standing for God’s truth. When believers deny themselves, live by God’s standard rather than man’s, and embody mercy, purity, peacemaking, and righteousness, they inevitably provoke opposition, slander, and persecution. This is not a sign of failure but of faithfulness, for such suffering testifies that Christ’s life and standards are truly at work in us. Instead of despair, the Christian is called to rejoice, knowing that persecution for Christ’s sake places him in the company of the prophets and secures a reward that far outweighs present affliction. Thus the Beatitudes begin and end with the same present promise: those who are poor in spirit and those who suffer for righteousness already possess the Kingdom of Heaven, living now in God’s peace and power while awaiting its fullness.

The seventh Beatitude, “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God,” does not praise those who merely avoid conflict or seek peace at any price, but those who actively bring God’s peace into real situations of strife. True peacemakers do not dodge issues out of fear; they face conflict honestly and bring something real to it peace with God in Christ. A man cannot give peace to others unless he first possesses it himself, and therefore God’s peacemakers are those who have seen their own poverty of spirit, mourned their sin, been tamed by God, received His mercy, and been purified in heart through Christ. The peace they bring is not human compromise or emotional soothing, but reconciliation rooted in the gospel, for Christ alone is the true Peacemaker who reconciles God and man. Such peacemaking will often be misunderstood and even resisted, yet its reward is not human approval but the enduring name God gives: “children of God.” To be a peacemaker is to share in Christ’s own work, patiently serving under His rule, leaving results in His hands, and living out a disciplined, Christ-governed life that reflects the peace of the Kingdom.

The sixth Beatitude, “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God,” confronts us with an apparent impossibility, since Scripture makes clear that the human heart is naturally corrupt and incapable of purifying itself; yet Christ does not mock us with an unattainable promise, but offers what He Himself gives. Purity of heart is not achieved by moral effort or self-discipline, for no man can change his own nature, but is granted by God when He gives a new heart through Jesus Christ. The pure in heart are therefore not those who trust in their own goodness, but those who confess their impurity, are united to Christ, and receive His purity as their own. To see God does not mean a physical vision of the invisible Spirit, but a true and living knowledge of God as He reveals Himself in His Son “He that hath seen me hath seen the Father.” When Christ dwells within us, He becomes both our purity and our vision, progressively cleansing us and opening our eyes to the glory of God. Thus this Beatitude promises no empty ideal, but real transformation: those who despair of their own hearts and cling to Christ are made pure in Him and are granted the supreme blessing of truly knowing and seeing God.
