A.J. Mencias still remembers the day we met: two Notre Dame premed students laughing in the back of a biology lecture hall. More than 30 years later, we picked up the conversation on Golden Helmets & Green Jackets. ☘️

We talked about surviving organic chemistry, the Notre Dame football games we watched as students, and how A.J. went from those lecture halls to caring for Irish athletes as a hand surgeon. We also got into scaphoid fractures, football return-to-play decisions, and the advances he’s seen in hand surgery.

And yes, I told him about the first time I walked into an operating room in West Lafayette—and promptly passed out. 😂
