Go Football Podcast Episode 67 - Red & Yellow Cards

When Should Youth Players Receive Cards?

When should young footballers receive yellow and red cards? Should we treat mistakes differently at grassroots level, or are there times when discipline has to come first?

In this episode of the Go Football Podcast, it looks at one of the biggest talking points in grassroots football: discipline, refereeing and when a young player’s actions cross the line.

Football is a game of mistakes, learning and development. Young players will mistime tackles, misjudge challenges and occasionally let their emotions get the better of them. But where do we draw the line between a genuine mistake and behaviour that deserves a caution or a sending-off?

⚽ In this episode, we discuss:

🟨 Yellow cards: When is a challenge reckless, and when is it simply a mistimed tackle?

🟥 Red cards: Why dangerous challenges, excessive force and serious misconduct cannot be ignored just because a player is young.

🗣️ Dissent and sin bins: How grassroots football in England deals with dissent, including temporary dismissals for relevant offences.

👨‍🏫 The coach’s responsibility: How coaches can teach discipline, respect and emotional control without taking away a young player’s confidence.

🧑‍⚖️ The referee’s perspective: Why officials need support, consistency and respect, even when we disagree with a decision.

🧠 Learning from mistakes: How parents and coaches can help players respond positively after receiving a card.

⚖️ Fairness and consistency: Should age, ability or the importance of a match influence how discipline is applied?

We also explore the balance between developing young footballers and protecting the safety and spirit of the game. Players need the freedom to make mistakes and learn, but they also need to understand that reckless challenges, dangerous conduct and disrespectful behaviour have consequences.

A yellow or red card should be more than a moment of punishment. Used appropriately, it can be an opportunity to teach responsibility, respect and better decision-making.

The key is knowing the difference between a player who is learning the game and a player whose behaviour puts others at risk.

🎧 Join the conversation: Do young players receive too many cards, not enough, or is the real issue consistency? How should grassroots football balance player development with discipline?
