Being quick with answers can make a manager feel useful. It can also teach the team to bring every difficult thought back to the manager.
In this episode, Christine shares a real coaching example of a capable manager facing an open assignment. Rather than giving him the solution, she stopped the session and asked him to come back the next morning after properly reading the brief and doing his own thinking.
He returned with a very different level of ownership.
The lesson is simple: sometimes people do not need your answer. They need a better question and enough space to answer it.
Useful questions include:
• What do you think?
• What would you recommend?
• What can you do by the date?
• What information is missing?
• What is your first move?
There are genuine emergencies where the leader should simply act. But most management problems are not buildings on fire.
Better questions and deliberate thinking time build judgement, confidence, ownership and capability.
