Georgetown’s 2026-27 hoops season kicks off with a brutal BIG EAST schedule—32 games total, including 20 conference clashes against rivals like Seton Hall, UConn, and Xavier. The Hoyas open at home Dec. 19, then face back-to-back road trips and grueling stretches, including three games in seven days. February brings tough road tests in Wisconsin and Illinois, followed by home showdowns and a March finale against Marquette. With travel, rhythm, and rivalry on full display, this is shaping up to be a defining season for the Hoyas—and fans are already lining up for tickets.

Georgetown’s long-awaited boathouse gets the green light as the National Capital Planning Commission approves the deal — a major win for rowing athletes who’ve dreamed of their own dedicated space since 1998. The university will lease land from D.C., swapping property with the National Park Service to help define the C&O Canal boundary, while students celebrate the promise of easier practices and legitimized team pride. Final approval still hinges on the mayor’s request to the D.C. Council, but this milestone signals a historic step forward for Georgetown rowing — and its legacy.

A landmark financial aid lawsuit, ignited in 2022, is heating up again as five elite universities including Georgetown challenge a judge’s decision to certify a class-action case alleging collusion to keep aid packages artificially low. While 12 schools that settled earlier have already paid over $280 million into a fund distributing $2,000 average payouts to eligible students, the fate of the remaining defendants hangs in the balance. An appeals court is now reviewing key expert testimony that allowed the class action to proceed — and if it overturns the ruling, thousands of claims could vanish, shifting liability to individual students and potentially derailing the case entirely. With trial delayed until November, this legal chess match could reshape the future for thousands of students still waiting for justice.

Michael Sweetney, Georgetown’s dominant big man and NBA draft pick, has passed away at just 32 — leaving behind a legacy defined by his unstoppable college dominance, All-Big East honors, and unforgettable performances like his 35-point, 20-rebound quadruple-overtime thriller. A cornerstone of the Hoyas’ offense for three seasons, he was drafted ninth overall by the Knicks and played four NBA seasons with the Knicks and Bulls — but it was his Georgetown days that cemented his place as one of the program’s all-time greats. The basketball world mourns the loss of a player who commanded the paint, inspired teammates, and will forever be remembered as “forever a Hoya.”

Michael Sweetney, the former Georgetown basketball star who dazzled with 18 points and 9 rebounds a game, has passed away at 43. Drafted ninth overall in 2003 alongside LeBron and Carmelo, he played four NBA seasons before chasing his passion overseas. A devoted family man, he poured his heart into raising his kids and supporting his wife of 30 years. After retiring from play, he turned to coaching, leading Yeshiva University to a 50-game win streak and two titles. Despite his on-court brilliance, he battled depression and grief after losing his father — a reminder that even legends carry unseen burdens.
