What are Genesis, Job, and Exodus actually about?

In this Sunday School lesson, we review the content and purpose of three important Old Testament books: Genesis, Job, and Exodus. Rather than simply knowing theological conclusions, we want to know the actual content of Scripture and understand how each book communicates its message to God's people.

In Genesis, we review creation, the fall, the flood, Babel, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and the descent of God's people into Egypt. We also consider how Genesis would have encouraged the Israelites to trust God and move forward toward the Promised Land rather than return to Egypt.

In Job, we review Job's suffering, his discussions with his friends, God's response, and Job's restoration. We consider the important lesson that proverbial wisdom is generally true but is not an inflexible rule: suffering does not necessarily mean that someone has committed some particular sin.

In Exodus, we review Israel's deliverance from Egypt, the establishment of the covenant through Moses, and the instructions for worship and the tabernacle. We consider why Moses emphasized these things to Israel and why God's people were to remain faithful to the covenant even after Moses was no longer with them.

This lesson is part of a larger effort to become more familiar with the content of the books of the Bible so that we can better understand Scripture as a whole.

Whether you are a Presbyterian or Reformed Christian, a student of Scripture, or simply someone who wants to understand the Old Testament better, this lesson provides a concise review of Genesis, Job, and Exodus.
