What if someone could take your sins away after you died?

Not through prayer. Not through confession.

By eating.

In this episode of Generation X Paranormal, Logan and Nicole are joined by Rissa to dive into the strange, unsettling, and surprisingly complicated folklore surrounding the Sin Eater—a person believed to consume food associated with the dead and, in doing so, take on their sins.

The story takes us to the Welsh-English border, where some of the best-known historical accounts of sin eating originated, and then across the Atlantic into the folklore of Appalachia.

But the deeper we dig, the stranger the story becomes.

What did a Sin Eater actually eat? Why were bread, ale, cheese and even salt associated with the ritual? Was the practice connected to fears of the restless dead? And could changing religious beliefs during the Protestant Reformation have helped create a need for someone to take on the sins of the deceased?

We'll also meet Richard Munslow, the man often described as the last known Sin Eater of England, and explore the tragic circumstances surrounding his life and the way his story has been remembered.

Then we follow the Sin Eater into Appalachian folklore and popular culture, where books, television, movies and comics helped transform a murky historical tradition into the mysterious hooded figure many of us recognize today.

From Sleepy Hollow and Night Gallery to The Last Sin Eater, Marvel's Sin-Eater, The Order and Fargo, the legend has continued to evolve.
And there's one question we keep coming back to:

If the Sin Eater carried everyone else's sins… what happened to the Sin Eater when he died?

This is the story of the Sin Eater—a strange piece of death folklore sitting somewhere between history, religion, ritual, grief and the supernatural.

Generation X Paranormal explores haunted locations, UFOs, cryptids, high strangeness, folklore, and the unexplained—one story at a time.

The Haunted Aurora Brothel: Ghosts, EVPs & Dark Secrets of Missouri's 1890s Mining Town

This week on Generation X Paranormal, Logan and Nicole head to Aurora, Missouri, to investigate one of the town's most intriguing historic locations: the Aurora Brothel.

Located near the historic railroad depot in what was once a booming Missouri mining town, this massive 19th-century building has a complicated past involving saloons, gambling, hotels, businesses, and the people who lived and worked in Aurora during its mining boom. Local history says the building was once a brothel, but our research uncovered a much more complicated story.

Before the investigation even begins, Logan experiences a strong impression of a woman dressed in purple. Once inside, the team encounters reports of shadow figures, unexplained voices, strange activity, and a particularly disturbing presence in the basement.

Then things get really interesting.

During the investigation, we capture an EVP that appears to validate something Logan heard directly in his ear. We also receive responses about the building, its occupants, the rooms upstairs, and what one spirit claims happened there.

Our historical research takes us back to the 1890s and the tragic story of Nora Henry, a woman who died after taking an overdose of morphine in a building directly across the street from the Aurora Brothel. Using historic newspapers and Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps, we trace the changing history of the buildings surrounding the location and examine what we can—and cannot—actually prove about Aurora's brothel history.

Was this really a brothel?

Who were the people who lived and worked here?

Could the spirits still connected to this building be tied to its 19th-century history?

And what exactly did we capture on our recorders?

Join us for one of our most fascinating investigations yet as we explore the Aurora Brothel in Aurora, Missouri, its dark history, unexplained activity, and the EVPs captured inside this historic building.
