Russell joined the Prime Video series for Season 4 before returning for its fifth and final season, earning an Emmy nomination for his work on the series finale, ‘Blood and Bone’. He discusses the challenge of inheriting the show’s established sonic identity, developing the sounds of its superpowers, and ensuring that a room full of battling Supes doesn’t become one exhausting wall of noise.

We also discover why Eric Kripke’s notes usually involve making things wetter and more disgusting, how some very ordinary materials became some extremely unusual body parts, and which new characters gave Russell the greatest creative challenge.

This week on Geektown Talks To…, Dave Elliott sits down with Graham Yost, showrunner of Apple TV’s acclaimed sci-fi drama ‘Silo’.

With Season 3 approaching its finale, some of the huge questions hanging over the series are finally beginning to get answers. Graham talks about the challenge of making those answers as satisfying as the mysteries which came before them, and why Hugh Howey’s original novels gave him confidence that the story could deliver on its promises.

We also discuss the challenges of adapting the second novel, keeping Rebecca Ferguson’s Juliette at the centre of the television series, and why memory became such an important part of Season 3.

Graham also takes us behind the writing process for Season 3’s two timelines, explains how the team decided where to jump between them, and reveals just how far ahead they were able to plan the show’s four-season story.

And, without spoiling anything, there are still some very big answers coming. Graham teases a “huge reveal” in the opening episode of Season 4 and gives us an indication of when we might finally see the concluding season.

In this episode of Geektown Talks To..., Dave catches up with production designer Rob Tokarz as ‘Hacks’ takes its final bow.

Rob first joined the Emmy-winning comedy as an art director in Season 2 before stepping up to production designer, helping shape the increasingly ambitious world surrounding Deborah Vance, Ava Daniels and the wonderfully strange collection of people orbiting them.

We last spoke to Rob around a year ago, just before he began prep on Season 5. At that point, he had no idea what the writers were about to throw at him. Now the series has ended, he returns to reveal just how enormous that final challenge became.

Rob talks about creating an astonishing number of sets across the season, jumping between Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York and Paris, recreating locations viewers might assume were real, and working alongside visual effects to make some extremely complicated sequences appear completely effortless.

We also get into the return to Deborah Vance’s Vegas world, designing pieces of her history that had previously existed only in dialogue, the painstaking details that might never actually be noticed on screen, and how the production design quietly helps tell the story of both Deborah and Ava.

Rob also reflects on joining ‘Hacks’ as an art director before eventually taking charge of its production design, the confidence he gained over several seasons, the friendships forged behind the scenes, and which sets from his time on the show will stay with him.

Plus, with ‘Hacks’ now finished, we talk about what sort of worlds Rob would love to build next... and whether one particular piece of the show might just be sitting in storage ready for a possible return.
