This podcast is a conversation between Israel Gebru Danny, Ethiopian-Canadian personal development and motivational speaker, and Annette L Demers, law librarian and leadership mentor.

Connoisseurs of ideas, blue-sky thinkers and globally-minded, the authors explore ideas that cross boundaries and explode in-the-box thinking.

Off-grid and sustainable living, nature, gardening and agriculture, self-awareness and self-actualization and dozens of other thought-provoking conversations are richly explored.

Throughout these episodes, we also plan to include the perspectives and experiences of newcomers to Canada, as another source of inspiration.

"On a serene July 28 afternoon in Windsor, Ontario, Annette and Israel found themselves sitting together on a weather-worn park bench, watching the gentle rhythm of the day unfold.

Looking out across the calm, shimmering expanse of the Detroit River toward the skyline of Michigan, the atmosphere felt delightfully still.

The air was crisp and fresh, boats drifted lazily along the current, and a family of ducks glided gracefully across the water’s edge.

In that quiet, unhurried moment, away from the noise of daily routines, a spark was ignited. They began talking about the kind of world they wanted to cultivate and the wisdom they longed to share.

What if there was a welcoming space where people could gather to trade practical knowledge, swap lived experiences, and sow the seeds for a more intentional, sustainable lifestyle?

Right there on the riverbank, surrounded by the quiet beauty of nature, the Garden of Ideas Podcast was born rooted in simplicity, nurtured through genuine conversation, and grown with a shared purpose to inspire a meaningful life."

  • Garden of Ideas - Episode 7 - The Box
    2026/09/01

    The Box

Most of our episodes have the same jumping off point: MINDSET

What do we mean by it?

-The Box (a mental construct that we use to define ourselves and our relationship to other people and to the society that we live in.

-In the book, “The Four Agreements” Don Miguel Ruiz, he calls them our “agreements”

-In the Avatar course by Harry Palmer, he refers to them as “our beliefs”

-In psychological literature, it’s called our “conditioning”

We can also think of it as:

    1. The confined thinking

    2. The usual way

    3. The old trend thinking

    4. The habitual action

    5. The repeated norm thinking

    6. The adapted behaviour

Where does “the box” come from?

What are the benefits of being in the box?

What are the negatives of being in the box?

What good can come from breaking free from the box?

What can break us free from the box?

-Become aware of your beliefs in order to shed light on them (and possibly to blow them up).

-Harry Palmer “The Avatar Course” has some neat tools for becoming aware of our beliefs.

One exercise is to share in a safe space, a viewpoint on a particular topic. Then keep going back and forth to look at the many many viewpoints that can exist about that topic.

When teaching kids, make sure that they know why rules exist and, where appropriate, that there are other ways of thinking about things. Try not to stifle their creativity and curiosity.

Build a community of “like-minded” outside-the-box thinkers. Ideas can spread like wildfire.’

Ultimately, it can be empowering to know that it is possible to live between two worlds – to be able to actively choose when, where and what aspects of the box we want to move into (and then out of, at will).

  • Garden of Ideas - Episode 6 - The Façade
    2026/08/25

    Defining it:

Façade - A false appearance or outward show that hides what is really happening.

1.lack of self knowledge - we lose trust

2.lack of self respect - we deny ourself

3.Not being ourselves - we live life by acting / drama

4.Choosing a pretending life becomes an aimless journey

    5. We cover our true identity.

    Disadvantages of a Masked Life

Lack of freedom – You may feel unable to express your true thoughts and feelings.

Stress and anxiety – Hiding your real self can create emotional pressure.

Loss of identity – Constantly pretending can make you lose touch with who you really are.

Difficulty in relationships – Others may find it hard to know and understand the real you.

Loneliness – Keeping your emotions hidden can make you feel isolated.

Low self-confidence – Always trying to fit in may reduce your confidence and self-esteem.

    Origins

Our façade may come from childhood - maybe from our parents, where we may have been told "you're not good enough" - and we took it to heart.

Then whenever we received positive feedback from our parents (maybe we got attention if we got good grades, were good at sports, or did service around the house) - these might be the same things that we look to do continuously to try to fit in and be loved in our adult lives. SO now we are:

-a high achiever or type A personality

-a giver / someone who is always self-sacrificing at the expense of others, etc.

Our façade is grounded in a culture of consumerism (you're not good enough if you don't have the car, the house, the clothes, the vacation, etc).

Marketers condition us to compare ourselves with other people.

The façade is the opposite of having a strong sense of self.

-this means we are always walking on egg shells in many facets of life:

-maybe we have imposter syndrome at work (so we never actualize / or show our true

    potential at work)

-maybe we have no intimacy - we've never uncovered who we really are with the people

    that we care about; so many of our relationships might be very superficial;

=there's no strong connection with people if we have not been vulnerable with them.

=this can impact on our finances - many people go and take out debt for the big car or big truck or big house or boat or other "stuff" that they can't afford - then they are putting themselves and their families at risk.

Can we self-actualize if we are not being authentic with others?

As we mentioned in a previous podcast, we can only self-actualize if our basic needs are met. So if we don't feel safe being who we really are, then we can't let our light shine; we can't pursue our own life interests; we can't speak our truth in work, family or social settings.

How much of the loneliness epidemic can be traced to people's anxiety about being judged or not being good enough.

    Practical Tips:

Sometimes we have to lose everything in order to find out who we truly are / what we really value.

Going back to simplicity and uncluttering can be empower. See our podcast on Simplicity.

Start to confide in a counsellor, or a trusted friend.

Use journaling to uncover old wounds and become aware of them. We can't fix what we can't see.

    Be yourself.

    Accept yourself.

    Respect yourself.

    Use your talent without fear.

    Stop being people pleaser.

    Live with purpose.

    Live a meaningful life.

    Live your values.
