A needle found whilst out walking is the cultural object of this episode's guest, Essex-based artist Selena Chandler. Her unique approach to her artmaking and materials brings a new perspective to this season's examination of enchantment.

Selena is a trained basket maker and has a multidisciplinary practice that draws on heritage craft skills and includes sculpture, performance and community projects. Her materials (which tend to be found and are generally natural) are gathered, stitched and woven to create intricate artworks that comment on landscapes, places and communities.

Selena finished a course at the alternative artschool TOMA, in Southend, Essex in 2025 and exhibits regularly. Her work has been shown at galleries including The Beecroft Southend,The Minories Colchester, The NoticeBoard Uffington Lincolnshire, Thameside Gallery Thurrock, The Old Waterworks Southend, The Nose Walton-on-the-Naze, SafeHouse Peckham and The Whitechapel Gallery. Commissions include for ST-ART Thurrock and The Estuary Festival and Selena has undertaken residencies at METAL, Studio459tomar, Space Studios Colchester and Othona Essex. She is currently working on 'Walking in Pairs', a collaborative project with Ella Johnston.

The latest episode in our Enchantment season features artist and educator Katherine Tulloh. Katherine studied painting at Chelsea College of Art and Literature at University of Cambridge and this is reflected in her practice. Katherine's most recent solo exhibition For the Ravers was held at William Blake House, London in 2024. In 2025 Katherine curated Nobodaddy at Findings Gallery, London E5, an exhibition inspired by James Joyce's Ulysses. In out chat we discuss Katherine's earlier co-curated exhibition Think and Wonder, Wonder and Think at the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green, London (now Young V&A) in which contemporary artists were asked to respond to the museum's collection.

Katherine's cultural artefact is Joseph Cornell's 1955 short film Gnir Rednow which he adapted from footage shot by Stan Brakhage and features disorientating footage of NYC's soon-to-be dismantled Third Avenue Elevated Railway. We talk about Cornell's life and work, Katherine's painters of Ravers, looking through windows, childhood wonder, scary dolls, destroying artworks and much more

The third episode in our Enchantment season features artist and educator Rosemary Cronin. Rosemary's latest project is Play Studio: Dream Worlds at Tate Britain which is open until June 2025 (check Tate website for opening times).

Rose's cultural artefact is an issue of Prediction magazine from 1974 which she keeps on her bedside table. We talk about Ithel Colquhoun, The College of Psychic Studies, surrealism, having work revealed in dreams, tarot cards, scepticism, disrupting makeup advertising, pleaser heels, Hitchcock's Spellbound (1945), the iconic TV series Bewitched and much more.

The second episode in our Enchantment season features artist Grant Foster whose solo show, Home to My Teenage Bedroom has just opened at the Phoenix Art Space in Brighton (and runs until 13 April 2025).

Grant's cultural artefact is a 'strange fossil' which he found on a beach while on holiday in the Quantocks in the west of England. We talk about animals, time, Philip Guston, Mike Kelley, Mike Nelson, Caravaggio and much more.

We recorded this episode, the first in our new Enchantment season, live at Red Lion Books in Colchester as part of Sluice [Vernacular] - the latest interation of the artist led organisation's expo.

Our guest for the episode is Hayley Lock, an artist whose interests lie in the occult and its intersection with female otherness. Her chosen cultural artifact is a mystical mirror, reputedly owned by Elizabeth I's court astronomer John Dee, which is currently housed in the British Museum.

Hayley talks about working with and under hypnosis, the Essex witch trials, and finding witch marks in the windmill attached to her house on the Suffolk/Norfolk borders. Not quite coincidentally Witch Marks is also the name of Transition Gallery's exhibition at The Minories in Colchester which took part over Sluice weekend (14-16 June 2024) and featured Hayley's artworks alongside work by six other artists.

Cathy Lomax and Jennifer Caroline Campbell talk to Mississippi born actor/director Jaclyn Bethany about Tennessee Williams' play, The Glass Menagerie.

This is the latest episode in our Biography series – The Glass Menagerie is inspired by Williams own life and he based the narrator, Tom, on himself. We discuss Jaclyn's experiences of playing Laura (a character inspired by Williams' sister Rose), her participation in a recent production of The Pretty Trap (an early version of The Glass Menagerie) and her new film Tell That to the Winter Sea. We also talk about the latest Tennessee Williams issue of Arty magazine which is edited by Jaclyn and Cathy, and the Transition Gallery exhibition Hard Candy which includes Williams inspired work by Cathy, Jennifer and five other artists.

For episode five of our first season we talk to artist Luke Burton. Our discussion is centred on Luke's chosen cultural artefact, the 2004 Philip Guston retrospective at the Royal Academy, an exhibition he saw as a student at Chelsea College of Art, which alongside the 2023-24 Guston show at Tate Modern, bookends Luke's career as an artist. Guston is of course a hugely influential painter and the stylistic switches in his career – from figurative to abstract to figurative – are just one of the subjects we discuss. Also on the table are painting's connections to other artforms, the language of painting, Guston's controversial subject matter, and how we as artists are influenced by the work we see. Please be aware that we do deal with some sensitive material around Guston's paintings of KKK figures which some listeners may prefer to avoid.

We end the episode with a podcast extra made up of Luke's vox pops about Guston gathered from other artists.
