A wildling army a hundred thousand strong reaches Castle Black, and the Night's Watch defends the only fortified gate in a 700-mile ice wall on two fronts at once. Mance Rayder's main host pours from the trees with giants and mammoths while Tormund, Styr, and Ygritte hit the south gate from behind. Aemon's Targaryen reveal retroactively reframes every Daenerys scene, and Sam's speech to Pyp — that loving Gilly gave him something to lose — names the hour's thesis: stakes equal fear. Jon's logic for the suicide walk is the strategic spine going forward — Mance is the only thing binding a hundred tribes into an army, so killing him fragments the threat. The cost is laid out plainly: Pyp, Grenn, and Ygritte dead, Thorne and Tormund out of the fight, and Jon walking unarmed into the wildling camp with no plan beyond the kill.
