Mitzvahs are not good deeds, they are channels through which we can receive divine light, clarity, wisdom and the joy and well being we crave.
This mitzvah, Give Everyone The Benefit of The Doubt, is a daily practice that we can engage in with all relationships. It explores a new way of being with a person, especially someone who is difficult or upsetting. As we give them the benefit of the doubt, we change the way we perceive and react to others. It helps us let go of taking their behavior personally and suffer as a result. Instead we see more deeply into who they are and what they are experiencing, and often can feel compassion and respond differently as well. Needless to say, as we see others changes the way they see them themselves, and also the way in which they respond to us.
