  • Remote Sensing in Africa: Satellite Data Sharing Gaps and the Need to Push Radar, LiDAR, and Hyperspectral

    In this episode, we are delighted to have Prof. Tsehaie Woldai as out guest. Prof. Woldai founded the African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment AARSE) and has decades of experience in remote sensing in Africa, Europe and all over the world. He says many African countries have their own satellites but often do not share the data, with South Africa, Egypt, and increasingly Nigeria noted as exceptions, while some launches are for prestige. Students reportedly complain they still cannot access national satellite data, so people rely heavily on free resources like Sentinel data and tools such as SNAP and QGIS.We observe very little radar remote sensing output from Africa but we are unsure why. They argue radar is important for hazards, archaeology, mining, and interferometry, and also highlight limited access to LiDAR (often kept secret, with only small drone-based efforts) and scarce hyperspectral data, hoping Europe or the U.S. provide more.

  • Citizen Science and Remote Sensing to Assess Earthquake Damage to Turkey’s Cultural Heritage

    Host Timo Balz welcomes Professor Çiler Çilingiroğlu (Ege University) and Associate Professor Dr. Nusret Demir (Akdeniz University), winners of the 2026 European Heritage/Europa Nostra Award (Citizens Engagement and Awareness) for assessing earthquake damage to cultural heritage sites after the February 2023 Turkey–Syria earthquakes. Çelik describes initial grief and communication blackouts, then launching a social media call for volunteers to document damage; Demir proposed using radar satellite (SAR) remote sensing. About 50 remote volunteers organized via Instagram and WhatsApp built a new georeferenced database from scratch, covering about 1,500 sites across provinces. International networks supplied open and commercial SAR and related products, enabling rapid, bureaucracy-free work that also supported infrastructure and public offices.
