Cold, methodical survival hid in a frozen cup tilted at exactly fifteen degrees - the same angle as a truck nose-down in a drainage rut - and one transposed digit in a field note sent rescuers miles the wrong way. The discrepancy left a 31-year-old timber assessor with a quarter tank of gas, a wool blanket, and dwindling heat for four days; how did a single curved pencil mark cost him those hours?
In this episode, we follow the timeline from the morning Michael Cole went missing to the moment Kelly Bailey found his truck, reconstructing what he did to stretch fuel and warmth while search teams were routed to the wrong spur. What choices kept him alive long enough to be found, and how did one small error in a digit change everything?
Person: Michael Cole
Date: March 14, 2019
Location: Spur Seven, Aldercroft logging network
Age: 31
Status: Found alive in vehicle after four days
- The truck was nose-down in a drainage rut at a 15-degree tilt with a cup of coffee frozen solid and tilted at the same angle.
- Michael left home on Sunday, March 10 and completed the parcel walk before a storm dropped 4 inches of snow by 6 PM and 8 inches by 7 PM.
- He was high-centered 6.5 miles from the Aldercroft Main junction on Spur Seven, while searchers were sent to Spur Four due to a handwritten "7" transcribed as "4".
- He rationed fuel by running the engine 20 minutes on and 40 minutes off with roughly a quarter tank of gas and carried two granola bars, a sleeve of saltines, a packet of peanut butter, a Carhartt jacket rated to 20°F, a wool cap, work gloves, and a wool blanket.
- The engine ran until sometime Wednesday night when the quarter tank was exhausted, after which external temperatures fell to 11°F and the cab temperature dropped from about 50°F toward freezing.
