What does it really mean to persevere—and why is perseverance so essential to the Catholic life?

In Episode 59 of From the Rooftop, Monsignor Patrick Winslow and Father Matthew Kauth reflect on the relationship between fortitude, endurance, hope, and the Christian vocation. Beginning with St. Augustine’s observations about the struggle between the mind, body, and will, the conversation moves from physical endurance to one of the great realities of the spiritual life: holiness is often less about extraordinary moments than about simply remaining faithful over the long haul.

But supernatural hope does not make ordinary life irrelevant. Monsignor Winslow and Father Kauth make the case for something Catholics can sometimes overlook: natural hopes matter too. Learn a language. Read the books you have always wanted to read. Paint. Exercise. Build something. Cultivate a skill. Pursue something worthwhile and learn to endure the difficulty required to achieve it. These ordinary pursuits can train us in perseverance and dispose us to live the supernatural life more faithfully.

In a culture increasingly tempted by comfort, distraction, discouragement, and despair, this episode offers a deeply Catholic reminder: the Christian life is not an escape from life—it is the grace to live it fully, faithfully, and with our eyes fixed on eternity.

And perhaps the great paradox is this: those who believe most deeply in Heaven are often the ones who accomplish the most on earth.
