At 27, Prentis Rollins walked away from a philosophy PhD with no dissertation topic, no backup plan, and one marketable skill... drawing.
What followed was nearly two decades at DC Comics, contributing artwork to Batman, Green Lantern, the Flash, and virtually every major character in the DC Universe.
In this episode, Prentis takes us back to age 11, drawing as an escape from a chaotic childhood in northern Virginia, and forward through the "do or die" leap into comics, the stack of rejection letters he had to work through before his first break, and the collaborative culture at Milestone Media that shaped how he thinks about creative teams.
We also talk about something far more personal; the loss of his brother to suicide, and how that grief became the catalyst for volunteering on UK crisis lines Samaritans and Shout, where Prentis has found unexpected fulfilment in the simple, difficult act of listening without judgement.
This is a conversation about pivoting on purpose, about talent versus perseverance, creativity as synthesis rather than invention, and what it means to turn pain into power through service.
