• 020: The Mountain
    2026/10/28

Ahead of them lies a mountain that smokes. This episode tells the arrival at Sinai: three days of preparation, then thunder, lightning, a thick cloud and a long tone that grows louder. And into that awe come ten sentences. Not numbered, in Hebrew „the ten words“, and the first is not a command at all but a memory: „I am the Lord, who brought you out of the house of slavery.“ The exodus becomes a covenant, stories become law. The research on awe shows what happens in such moments: the self grows smaller, the space beside it larger, and out of many individuals a we is formed. And an old thread is tied off. „You shall not murder“ points back to Cain, whose private deed at the field went unanswered. On the mountain it becomes a sentence for everyone. Freedom, the sober point, needs form, or it will not last.

What we take with us: Freedom needs form. Becoming free is an event, staying free is the work of agreeing on a few sentences that still hold once the rush is over.

  • 019: The Counsel
    2026/10/25

A stranger walks into this episode. Jethro, priest of Midian and Moses' father-in-law, brings Zipporah and the two sons back to the camp. He watches Moses judge the people from morning until evening, and says the soberest sentence in this whole wilderness: „This is not good. You are wearing yourself out.“ His advice is administration, not a miracle: appoint capable people as judges over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens, and keep only the hard cases for yourself. Leadership research knows the limit where one person can no longer carry it, and knows that the truly scarce resource is not time but attention. The remarkable thing is who gives this advice: a man of another tradition, with his own God, who then leaves again. The founding book gratefully preserves that its most important principle of order came from an outsider, and does not hide where it came from.

What we take with us: No one carries a whole people alone, and the most valuable counsel often comes from outside, from someone who has nothing to gain from it.

  • 018: The Raised Hands
    2026/10/21

No sooner is the thirst quenched than the first war comes. This episode tells two scenes from Rephidim. First the quarrel over water at Massah and Meribah, where the accusation is louder than the plea, because when something vital is missing, scarcity looks for a face. Then Amalek attacks, striking the exhausted at the tail of the march. Joshua fights in the valley, Moses stands on the hill with his hands raised. When his arms grow heavy, Aaron and Hur hold them up until the sun goes down. An old Jewish reading warns against taking the hands for a magic lever. And the brain research on social closeness shows what support really does: it does not take the load away, it turns the one who carries it into someone who can keep carrying.

What we take with us: No one holds their own arms up from morning until sundown. Support does not mean taking the load away, but standing close enough that the other can keep carrying it.

  • 017: The Bread
    2026/10/18

The sea is behind them, and three days later the water is bitter. This episode tells the hangover of freedom: Marah, where bitter water is made sweet, the grumbling for the fleshpots of Egypt, the quail in the evening and the manna in the morning. A small round grain no one recognizes, „man hu“, what is it. The Bedouin still know a sweet secretion on the tamarisk, and a zoologist turned it into a sober natural hypothesis. But the real test is a matter of the mind: gather only what you need for today. Whoever hoards, their store spoils. The psychology of scarcity explains why a well fed person can still be a slave in the head, and why trust is learned only one day at a time.

What we take with us: Whoever may gather only for the day must learn to trust the next morning. Scarcity sits not only in the bowl, but in the head.

  • 015: Let My People Go
    2026/10/11

A shepherd with a staff against the ruler of the mightiest empire of his time. It takes ten blows, a heart that turns to stone, and a night that Judaism has stayed up to retell every year for three thousand years. Beside the story we ask what natural scientists have found out about the plagues, and what psychology knows about hardened hearts and the trap of doubling down. And we ask what freedom costs, and who pays for it.

What we take away: half freedom is none. And: freedom that no longer remembers the taste of slavery gambles itself away again, that is why it is told, from generation to generation.

  • 014: The Name
    2026/10/07

A burning bush that does not burn up, a voice that calls Moses by name, and the longest letter of refusal in history: five times the shepherd says no. At the centre stands an answer to the question of God's name, three Hebrew words that philosophers have wrestled with for two thousand years: I will be who I will be. A name that cannot be conjured, cannot be owned, only met, ahead, in what is coming.

What we take away: it does not matter who you are, but who goes with you. And: the great rarely lives in the spectacular, but in what everyone walks past, until one person stops and looks.

  • 013: The Basket
    2026/10/04

A new book, and a new chapter of this series. A Pharaoh who did not know Joseph, forced labour and bricks of Nile mud and straw. Two midwives who quietly refuse a murder order, perhaps the first recorded refusal of conscience in world literature. And a child in a basket of reeds, whose Hebrew word, tevah, is the same the Bible uses only once more, for Noah's ark. This is where the book of Exodus begins.

What we take away: liberation begins when individual people, in inconspicuous places, refuse to go along. And: what a small act accomplishes, you never know in advance.
