We were a typical dysfunctional family of the 1960s. Our father, a second-generation alcoholic, ruled our home through fear—controlling water, electricity, noise, and daily life from the basement. If we walked too heavily or showered too long, he punished us by striking us on the head with his knuckles. Eventually, Mom divorced him and obtained restraining orders.
