He grew up in Bad Axe, Michigan, running the neighborhood until the whistle blew and life felt simple. Then Dennis Hill loses his mom at eight years old, gets raised by his newly married sister, and learns early what it means to adapt when the people you count on are suddenly gone. That foundation sets the tone for everything that follows, including the years where he bounces through jobs, searches for direction, and eventually collides with a draft notice during the Vietnam War.

We talk through the full arc of his military service: basic training, infantry training, learning to drive armored personnel carriers, and the fear that hits when Vietnam becomes real instead of theoretical. Dennis is honest about panicking, going AWOL briefly, and still ending up overseas. Once he arrives, he’s assigned to the Americal Division near I Corps and quickly discovers how fast quiet patrol routines can turn into chaos. His description of a firefight inside an enemy base camp, being shot through the neck, and the strange, slowed-down sensation of trauma is vivid, human, and unforgettable.

From there, the story becomes about survival and rebuilding: emergency care, evacuation, recovery, and a medical discharge that forces a new plan for adulthood. Dennis shares how he returns to school, fights for stability in the job market, and eventually builds a 33-year career with the United States Postal Service. We also cover marriage, kids, grandkids, retirement, and later health scares, including a stroke and a heart attack, all tied together by one steady lesson: never give up.

If stories of resilience, veteran oral history, and military-to-civilian transition matter to you, hit play, then subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review. What part of Dennis’s journey will you remember most?
