Jose Maria Ramirez, the driver in a deadly 2000 drive-by shooting that killed one person, just got denied parole for the third time—setting him back another three years behind bars. Convicted in 2001 of second-degree murder and multiple firearm charges, Ramirez’s sentence of 16 years to life now faces at least three more years before he can reapply. His co-defendant, Juan Pineda, is serving 40 years after pleading no contest. Both men were arrested hours after the shooting, which erupted when they returned to a house party following an argument. This latest denial marks yet another setback in Ramirez’s long legal battle for release.

Skip Hop just pulled its Elmo-shaped teether from shelves after reports of black eyes detaching — a serious choking hazard. The recall affects about 22,000 units sold at Carter’s and online between January and March. Though no injuries have been reported, four incidents of eye detachment prompted the CPSC to act. If you’ve got one, stop using it immediately and visit Skip Hop’s recall site to get disposal instructions and a $12 gift card (or CAD $14) for a refund — expect it in 2-3 weeks.

Fresno Unified is facing a legal firestorm over a defamation lawsuit involving Trustee Keshia Thomas, who accused a former football coach of racial slurs against her son — a claim the coach denies and has now taken to trial. The district, already shelling out nearly $400K in legal fees, is weighing whether to continue footing Thomas’s personal defense bill. Complicating matters: Thomas’s son admitted he fabricated part of the story, and Thomas herself apologized to the coach and his family — yet she refuses to resign from the school board or drop her City Council campaign. With mediation failing and a trial looming, this messy saga shows how personal accusations can spiral into costly public battles.
