概要
A barefoot trail appeared to rise from rotten April ice, cross thirty feet of weathered pine dock, and stop at a locked back door with a wet handprint - all while the occupant was away; who walked out of the lake and vanished, and how could anyone survive three and a half inches of ice? What explains compressed, frost-free depressions made after a hard freeze at 3:17 a.m.?
In this episode, we tell the sequence of events from the night of April 11 to the morning of April 12, 2011, following the discovery, initial police work, and local context that framed the mystery; could the timeline and the forensic details point to a human visitor or something else?
Person: Paula Sawyer
Date: April 12, 2011
Location: Demarest cabin, eastern shore of Finch Lake, Kettridge County
Event: Bare footprints from dock to locked back door; wet hand smear on exterior door
Status: No forced entry; occupant absent during event
- The footprints crossed thirty feet of weathered pine dock from the direction of the ice to the back door.
- Ice thickness measured by Kettridge Anglers' Club on April 9: 3.5 inches.
- Temperature dropped to 29°F at 3:17 a.m., the first hard freeze after six days of mid-50s warming.
- Deputy Len Marsh photographed an approximately eight-inch long wet smear on the left side of the back door at knee height.
- A damp braided rug inside the back entryway showed a roughly foot-shaped pattern near the threshold.
