Dark folklore begins where the record stops making sense: a man standing motionless beneath an ash tree for three days before he simply isn't there anymore, a ledger listing seven travelers a bridge keeper refused to let cross, a town hall where one woman's name was scratched out of every register until no living person could say it aloud. These aren't campfire exaggerations. They're the strange, documented edges of real places and real disappearances, and this show exists to walk directly into the folklore surrounding them.

Each episode reconstructs one story in full, from the first written mention to the last person who claims to remember how it ended. We work from parish records, court transcripts, local newspapers, and the kind of oral testimony that keeps folklore alive only because someone refused to let it die. No host chats over the material. No jokes soften it. Just a single narrative, told slowly enough that you can feel the fear the original witnesses felt, and precise enough that you can check the sources yourself.

If you're drawn to dark folklore because it sits at the border of history and superstition, this is built for you. We cover legends that grew out of real crimes, folklore that villages built to explain what they couldn't otherwise survive, and superstitions that hardened into law because too many people died ignoring them. Vanishing men, forbidden crossings, erased names, cursed harvests, watchers in the trees. Every episode asks the same question: what actually happened, and why did the people who lived through it need to turn it into folklore instead of a fact.

This is a show for anyone who reads folklore not as a bedtime story but as a record of something a community couldn't put into any other words, and who wants the version that still carries the fear the original witnesses felt.

The kerosene lantern kept returning - he lost twenty‑eight years searching

In this episode, we follow the slow, precise trail of a vanished man, a blanked church ledger, and a lantern that kept reappearing on moonless nights. The story traces decisions, records, and rituals that tied a small Ozarks community to one unresolved disappearance and asks what the persistence of those traces might mean.

    Person: Howard Phillips
Date: June 14, 1991 (disappearance); June 3, 2019 (lantern noted)
Location: Old Mill Road, Harlow Creek, Ozarks
Event: Kerosene lantern appearing at an unpowered utility post every new moon for 28 years
Record: Three cashier's checks totalling $34,000 drawn May 29, 1991 with blank payee lines

    - Lori Young, a meter reader, logged the lantern as "anomaly/no service at post" on June 3, 2019 and did not touch it.
    - Holly Wagner, a folklorist, recognized that the lantern had appeared every new moon for twenty-eight years.
    - Dennis Pratt, Harlow Creek constable, recorded a single right-foot lug-sole boot-print near the creek and measured it twice yearly for 28 years, noting he "didn't touch it."
    - Howard Phillips was the Methodist lay treasurer from 1988 to June 1991 and had signing authority over the church account.
    - On May 29, 1991, three cashier's checks totaling $34,000 were drawn against the church treasurer account with all payee lines blank and no corresponding ledger entries.

The Nance ground cost Gerald Foss his peace - he died six days after objecting

In this episode, we follow the tangled records and local memory around a four-point-two-acre parcel called the Nance ground, a formal handwritten objection, and the timing that links them to a sudden death. What questions about ownership, records, and disappearance keep resurfacing in Harkin Hollow?

    Person: Gerald Foss
    Date: May 8, 1981
    Location: Harkin Hollow, Vermont
Event: handwritten objection to proposed road expansion
    Person: Darlene Williams

    - A parish volunteer found a two-page, signed letter from Gerald Foss dated May 8, 1981, lodged in a 1981 church bulletin.
    - Foss’s objection opposed a road-expansion vote that would have given new access along the boundary of the Nance ground.
    - Foss died six days after writing and signing the objection; his death was recorded as cardiac arrest and not reinvestigated.
    - The Nance ground is a 4.2-acre parcel listed as present but never cultivated across six agricultural surveys from 1921 onward.
    - In late April 1981, waitress Darlene Williams queried the deeds office about who held exemption authority over the Nance ground; she disappeared the next morning.
