They are in quarantine for about a month; Chinese staff stay three months. Zoo Atlanta's previous pandas (Lun Lun, Yang Yang and twins Ya Lun and Xi Lun) returned to Chengdu in 2024. Georgia State professor Maria Repnikova says panda diplomacy softens China's image. Panda diplomacy dates to Nixon's 1972 visit, when Pat Nixon told Zhou Enlai she loved pandas; the National Zoo pair had five cubs, none survived. A livestream host sold 'diet tablet candy' containing the diuretic buthiazide while avoiding words like 'lose weight'; 1 year and 9 months. Diet coffee with sibutramine sold via social media in Inner Mongolia: 2 years 10 months.
