Denzel Aberdeen, Florida’s star shooting guard and former Kentucky transfer, is locked in a high-stakes legal battle to play this season — fighting for a temporary restraining order under the NCAA’s new “five-in-five” rule. Though the rule allows athletes five years of eligibility within a five-year window, it doesn’t apply retroactively to his class, leaving him stuck after four seasons. His team argues he’s been unfairly targeted — especially since he enrolled early and played limited minutes as a freshman — while the NCAA defends its stance. A recent court ruling temporarily blocked his path, but Florida coach Todd Golden remains optimistic, saying Aberdeen’s academic progress and team reliance on him make his case uniquely strong. With dozens of similar lawsuits already winning injunctions elsewhere, this fight could reshape college sports eligibility for future players.
