October 1996. Western Pennsylvania.

My husband and I lived in an old caretaker's house surrounded by thousands of acres of privately managed forest.

The house came with his job at a reforestation nursery.

It was nearly four miles from the nearest public road.

No nearby houses.

No passing traffic.

Just miles of trees and a quiet gravel driveway.

Most days, I loved living there.

Until one cold October morning.

My husband had already left for work when I heard a vehicle approaching our house.

A white van pulled into the driveway.

On its side was a sign that read HOME CLEANING SERVICE.

Two men stepped out.

The older one smiled and told me they had an appointment to clean our house.

I explained that I hadn't scheduled anything.

Then he mentioned my husband's full name.

He said my husband had arranged everything the previous afternoon.

That made it sound believable.

So I let them inside.

At first, everything seemed ordinary.

But as the men walked through the house, I began noticing little things.

They seemed more interested in the doors, windows, and garage than the actual cleaning.

One of them kept looking toward our vehicle keys.

The other asked questions about rooms he hadn't even seen.

Something didn't feel right.

I quietly went upstairs and called my husband.

I asked whether he had hired a cleaning company.

There was a pause.

Then he said something that changed the entire morning.

He hadn't hired anyone.

Before I could ask another question, the telephone connection suddenly went silent.

I looked out the bedroom window.

One of the men was standing beside the telephone junction box.

A moment later, I heard the other man calling my name from downstairs.

I knew I needed to stay calm.

So I returned to the kitchen and pretended everything was normal.

Then another vehicle arrived.

Three more people stepped out.

They said they had come to help with the cleaning.

But none of them carried any cleaning equipment.

And within minutes, I noticed something unusual about where everyone was standing.

One near the front door.

Another near the kitchen.

Someone else beside the staircase.

Five strangers were now inside my house.

And I was the only person who knew they hadn't been invited.

What happened next began with a simple question about a room that didn't exist.

And the answer told me everything I needed to know.
