Most people in Israel though of God’s kingdom in terms of visible, national restoration: freedom from Rome, vindication over enemies, and divine rule centered in the temple. Yet Jesus redefined that expectation. His kingdom was not built by revolt, withdrawal, or compromise but by a new community of self-giving love shaped around his own cross-bearing way.

What does the reality of the Kingdom of God have to say about who is really safe in this world? Is it those who have engineered their own security or is there another, better way?

A lot of times people picture Jesus as sort of a passive, mild-manned guy who went around just telling people to "be nice". Nobody gets crucified by preaching "be nice." Today we look at the courage of Jesus as he faces opposition to the political forces of his time.
