Real talk for fire wives, firefighter spouses, and first responder families. Fire Family Collective is the podcast for fire wives, firefighter spouses, and first responder families navigating the realities of life in the fire service. Formerly the Firehouse Roundtable, each episode features real conversations about firefighter marriage, fire wife mental load, parenting through shift work, and building community when isolation feels like part of the job.

You'll hear from real fire spouses — new and seasoned — sharing honest stories about mental health, trauma, resilience, and the unique pressures of loving someone in the fire service. No topic is off-limits: shift schedules, deployments, marriage strain, identity outside the "fire wife" role, grief, and the small moments that make fire family life worth it.

This podcast is an extension of the Fire Family Collective, a nationwide community built to support fire wives and firefighter families and break down the isolation so many face. Whether you're brand new to this life or a decade in, you're not alone — come as you are, and find your people.

  • What Nobody Tells You About Fire Family Life
    2026/09/24

Nobody hands you a manual for growing up as a fire daughter, and definitely nobody warns you that you might marry right back into the same life. Taylor Hernandez did both. Talking with Heather, she gets into things she never saw coming, like how Starlink and FaceTime have quietly changed the anxious wait during a wildfire deployment, and why finding a marriage counselor who works only with first responder couples turned her marriage around. She's honest about the mental load of homeschooling three kids mostly solo, the trap of measuring her life against someone else's curated fire family highlight reel, and the tradition she hopes her own kids carry forward one day. This is fire family life the way nobody tells you about it, until you're already living it.

    Takeaways

    • Growing up as a fire daughter can quietly prepare you for fire wife life long before you ever marry into it.
    • Tools like Starlink and FaceTime have changed the mental load of waiting on news during a wildfire deployment compared to her mother's era of landline check-ins.
    • Marriage counseling built specifically for first responder couples gave Taylor and her husband communication skills that general therapy never got them.
    • Homeschooling three kids while running the house solo through a 96 hour shift or a wildfire assignment is one of the biggest daily challenges fire wives describe.
    • Comparing her real life to the curated version of fire family life on social media is a trap Taylor actively works to avoid.
    • A tradition called the turkey pit, going back generations, keeps Taylor connected to her fire family roots every Thanksgiving Eve.
    • Putting the marriage first, ahead of the kids, is a philosophy Taylor and her husband credit for keeping their family strong through deployments and shift work.

  • Running a Business as a Firefighter's Wife
    2026/09/10

Jenny Santamaria didn't wait around for a good moment to open her pelvic floor physical therapy practice. She started it while she was still dating a rookie firefighter, then kept building right through the wedding, motherhood, and a schedule that flips every month. In this episode she gets straight about the nanny math that never quite adds up, the color coded shared calendar that nearly started a fight, and the point where she finally stopped calling herself type A. If you're trying to run a business, raise a toddler, and love a firefighter all at once, this one's proof you don't have to do it all in the same season.

    Takeaways

    • Running a business as a firefighter's wife means building flexibility in from day one. No nanny or sitter can promise to match a shift schedule that changes every month.
    • Firefighter marriage communication often comes down to small systems, like a color coded calendar. Get the system wrong and it creates more mental load than it solves.
    • A fire wife running her own business can protect her focus at work by making her husband the point of contact on shift days, then actually trusting him with it.
    • Mom guilt shows up even when you love your job. It's loudest on the nights your husband is solo parenting on his one day off so you can have a night out.
    • A firefighter marriage that lasts starts with reminding each other you're on the same team, even when your daily stress looks nothing alike.
    • A working fire wife growing a business and a family doesn't have to do it all at once. Life comes in seasons, not all in one.
    • Self care for firefighter spouses isn't selfish. Filling your own cup first is often what lets you actually show up for your marriage and your kids.

  • From Fire Wife to Author One List at a Time
    2026/08/27
Tami Davis substitute taught for years and raised two teenagers while her husband worked more than twenty years in the fire service. She didn't call herself an author until much later. In this episode she traces that whole path: watching her students get pulled deeper into their phones every year, which is what sparked the young adult novel Despite the Buzz, and turning to writing as a way to process what she went through during the Thomas Fire and the Montecito debris flow. She also lays out screen time rules and an evacuation checklist she built for her family based on the “6 P’s.TakeawaysTen-plus years of substitute teaching put Tami Davis in the room to watch phones take over kids' attention. That's where Despite the Buzz came from.Fire wife to published author took years. Tami says her husband's fire service career is a big reason she had room to finally finish the book.Publishing wasn't a solo effort. Her husband Shaun proofread the manuscript, took time off, and showed up for the book tour.Writing gave Tami a way to process fire wife life long before the novel existed. She was publishing essays and articles years earlier.Fire wife community usually starts small. One text inviting a new spouse to coffee can grow into a real support network over time.No phones until eighth grade, no social media until at least sixteen. Those screen time rules came straight out of Tami's own research for Despite the Buzz. The six P's checklist, people and pets, prescriptions, personal computers, papers, pictures, plastic cards, gives fire families something fast to grab during a wildfire evacuation.MentionedDespite the Buzz"Fire Evacuation and Emergency Preparedness" — Ventura County Mom Collective"Firehouse Feasts: Cooking with our First Responders" — Edible Ojai & Ventura CountyFight Right by John and Julie GottmanThe Mountain Is You by Brianna WiestFully Involved by Mynda OhsFit for Off Duty by Dr. Peter SalernoMindfulness for Warriors by Kim Colegrove911 At Ease International (the "At Ease" counseling program)Iverson Foundation for Active AwarenessOne805LIVE!Memorial Stair ClimbThe Pighetti ProjectWait Until 8th pledgeScreenagers Support the showJOIN US! 👉 https://www.firefamilycollective.org/collectiveSupport our Mission. 👉 https://bit.ly/Donate2FFCConnect with us on Instagram. 👉 https://www.instagram.com/firefamilycollective/Listen on the go:Apple podcasts: https://apple.co/4kvLKwbSpotify: https://spoti.fi/45IIRDlWatch on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNC3faooGcHBr1dHm_FVYBsPQ7XAtBtd-----------------The views, thoughts, and opinions expressed by the hosts and guests of the Fire Family Collective Podcast are solely their own and do not necessarily reflect the official policy, position, or views of their affiliated fire departments, agencies, employers, the Fire Family Collective, or the Ventura Fire Foundation. All content shared on this podcast is for informational and personal perspective purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical, mental health, legal, or therapeutic advice, diagnosis, or treatment. -----------------Copyright of Ventura Fire Foundation 2026.
