When a Black man sees a doctor who looks like him walk in, something happens. His shoulders come down. He relaxes. For too many of us, that feeling is rare, and it turns out it matters more than we ever knew.

This episode is about trust: why so many of us stopped going to the doctor, what the science says happens when we find one we trust, and how to actually get care that sees you as a whole person.

Dr. Leo talks honestly about the history behind the mistrust, and why that caution was earned. He breaks down a remarkable study out of Oakland, where Black men given a Black doctor said yes to far more care, enough that researchers estimated it could close a real part of the gap in heart disease deaths between Black and white men. But he's just as honest that a Black doctor isn't an option for everyone, and makes the case for what you're really looking for: not a doctor who looks like you, but a doctor who sees you. A practical, hopeful conversation about finding that person, or building that trust with the doctor you already have.
