At 28, newly married and building her career, Allie Brummel discovered that the lump she had been told was “nothing” was triple-negative breast cancer.
This week, Anne-Marie is joined by Allie Brumel, breast cancer survivor and co-founder of The Breasties: a global nonprofit supporting people affected by breast and gynaecological cancers through community, education and advocacy.
What began with social-media connections, informal meet-ups and a retreat for 20 people has grown into a global community, including Camp Breastie, which now welcomes more than 500 people.
Allie shares why survivorship was one of the hardest parts of her experience, how creating The Breasties became intertwined with her own healing and why the organisation believes that “community is treatment.”
In this conversation, you’ll hear:
- Why Allie had to advocate for herself after her concerns were initially dismissed
- How The Breasties grew from informal meet-ups into a global community
- Why connection and story-sharing can transform individual lives, systems and policy
- How Allie’s experience of parenthood after cancer inspired new support and advocacy for families
