Recorded in an emptied apartment outside Boston, where Lisa Michelle Zega is helping a close friend pack up her life for a move to Austin, this episode explores grief as a force that pulls us into the present.
The bare rooms become her metaphor. Clearing out a home, she suggests, is a model for every transition: we say goodbye, take in what the place has taught us, and release what no longer serves. Grief asks the same of us. It slows us down, makes us notice the energy we've been carrying, and offers up the lessons stored inside it.
Much of life, Lisa observes, passes unwitnessed. Modern culture keeps pulling us out of the present, and the moments we never examine don't vanish. They settle in us, unmetabolized. Grief interrupts that drift. It forces us into the now, where we can finally bring attention and love to what we've neglected.
Drawing on the children's book Maybe, she argues that simply being present honors everything we've lived, are living, and have yet to live. Healing, in this light, isn't a matter of building wholeness from scratch. The wholeness is already there. What heals is witness: turning our attention toward the overlooked parts of ourselves so that old energy can move back into the flow of life.
