Sports is a playground to learn about leadership when you make it a priority. There are so many teachable moments that get overlooked because we invest more in the x’s and o’s. In sports culture, it’s time to both simplify AND expand how we look at leadership - to be more inclusive and accessible to everyone. Because everyone has the potential to be an effective leader. People need fertile soil and the right conditions to grow into the leaders they're meant to be. The Find Your Peak Sports Leadership Podcast is a mix of solo episodes and conversations with people who do sports differently. Thanks for listening! • Damar Hamlin's story and our perception of time
    2023/01/18

Buffalo Bills football player Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest at 8:55pm on Monday, January 2nd during the first quarter of a Monday Night Football Game.

When Damar went down after what seemed like a routine tackle...time stopped.

What happened next was no longer about football. It was all about Damar.

Life is precious. None of us know how much time we have on earth.

What can you glean from Damar's story? Has it changed the way you coach? Will it shift your perspective on time?

Listen to hear more about how we often use time as an excuse. Learn what's behind the 'not enough time' smokescreen. Assess yourself to see if it's really about time...or if there's something deeper going on.

  • New Year, New Word of the Year
    2023/01/04

I stopped setting resolutions and started a practice of choosing a word-of-the-year back in 2006 when I read a blog about it by Christine Kane - a singer/songwriter from Asheville, North Carolina.

Back then, I was always travelling somewhere warmer (hopefully) with my team for winter training camp. Choosing a word-of-the-year was an easy activity for us to do no matter where we were. To me, it seemed to bring our team closer together. As a coach, I was always fascinated to hear what word each person choose and what their word meant to them. This yearly practice helped our team build trust, community and a more positive culture.

This episode walks you through a process of setting an intention by choosing a word of the year. Before you choose your word allow yourself to dream about what you want and what's possible. It can also be helpful to get clear about what you don't want.

Learn a few interesting tidbits about brain science that confirms why this practice is so powerful and what you can do to 'operationalize' your word so you stay connected to it all year long.
