Dr. Rodger Murphree examines the use of Lyrica and Neurontin for fibromyalgia and explains why he is cautious about both medications. Based on his experience treating people with fibromyalgia and chronic illness, he says many patients report limited relief or stop taking the drugs because of side effects. He discusses weight gain, blurred vision, tremors, fatigue, drowsiness, digestive problems, headaches, swelling, dizziness, muscle pain, anxiety, depression, balance problems, and brain fog. He says the loss of mental clarity can be especially damaging for people already struggling with fibro fog and poor sleep. Murphree says prescription medications can be useful, but treating each symptom with another drug may fail to address what is driving the condition. He describes fibromyalgia as involving an overly sensitive pain system in which pain signals are magnified or fail to turn off properly. He discusses poor sleep, low thyroid function, nutritional deficiencies, medication side effects, autoimmune conditions, viruses, inflammation, chronic stress, and what he calls the cell danger response as possible contributing factors. He also explains why basic thyroid testing may miss problems that could be connected to fatigue, pain, constipation, cold hands and feet, hair loss, and other symptoms. He also discusses the differences he sees between fibromyalgia and myalgic encephalomyelitis or chronic fatigue syndrome, including sleep patterns, immune symptoms, swollen glands, recurring sore throats, and past viral infections such as Epstein-Barr. Murphree reviews the history of Neurontin, raises concerns about patients remaining on several medications without knowing whether they still help, and says chronic illness usually requires more than symptom control. He encourages patients who are unsure about Lyrica to speak with their prescribing doctor about reviewing the medication and, when appropriate, gradually reducing it rather than stopping it on their own. At the same time, he recommends addressing restorative sleep, thyroid function, nutritional deficiencies, daily habits, and other possible sources of pain.
