Before satellites, radar, and computer models, meteorologists had to learn how to measure the atmosphere, recognize patterns, and understand the warning signs of approaching storms.

One of the scientists who helped make that possible was Father Angelo Secchi, an Italian Jesuit priest whose achievements extended far beyond astronomy.

Continuing our Italian and Italian-American Heritage Month series, this episode explores Secchi’s remarkable contributions to meteorology, including his pioneering automatic meteorograph, his investigations of Earth’s magnetic field, his interest in solar influences on terrestrial phenomena, and his efforts to improve systematic weather observation.

But Secchi’s scientific influence also reached across the Atlantic.

In Havana, another Jesuit scientist, Father Benito Viñes, was confronting one of the greatest meteorological challenges of the nineteenth century: understanding and forecasting Caribbean hurricanes.

The Belén Observatory used Secchi’s meteorograph, while Viñes developed new methods of interpreting cloud movements, atmospheric changes, historical storm tracks, and reports transmitted across the Caribbean.

On September 11, 1875, Viñes issued what NOAA identifies as likely the first publicly issued hurricane forecast.

We examine the scientific connections between these two priests, the instruments and observational methods that advanced weather science, and how discoveries made in nineteenth-century Italy contributed to the foundations of modern hurricane forecasting.

It’s a story of scientific innovation, international cooperation, and an Italian meteorological pioneer whose contributions deserve recognition alongside the more familiar names in weather history.
