Rabies cases are on the rise in North Dakota, with seven confirmed positives out of 321 tested samples — six bats and one skunk, five of them found right here in the state. Bats are only tested if specifically requested, and while the numbers may sound alarming, they’re within expected ranges nationally. Rabies is nearly always fatal once symptoms appear but is 100% preventable with immediate medical care. The virus spreads through saliva via bites or scratches, and unvaccinated pets are especially vulnerable. As bat activity increases in fall, experts warn that even tiny bites can be dangerous — so any contact with bats must be taken seriously. If bitten, scratched, or if a bat enters a room with sleeping people or children, seek medical help immediately. Keep pets vaccinated to stay protected.

Girl Scouts are dropping wild new cookies for 2027 — one made for dogs, called Patch Pals (blueberry muffin flavor with BARK), and another allergy-friendly option, Sparkables (oatmeal chocolate chip with sprinkles). Both hit online only on January 12, 2027, joining classics like Thin Mints. Proceeds support local troops, and you can get alerts via girlscoutcookies.org or texting “Cookies” to 59618. The cookie game’s expanding — even your pup’s getting in on the action.
